THE AMERICAN SOLDIER
A Photographic Tribute: The Civil War to the War in Iraq
This
catalog and the photographic exhibition on which it is based are a tribute
to the American soldier—to all the men and women who join the military
because they proudly choose to serve their country. When there is peace,
their readiness is the backbone of our security. In battle, they fight and
die for us.
The photographs collected here include images ranging from the bloody Civil War clashes fought in our nation's heartland to present-day battles in the streets of Baghdad. Their focus is on the soldiers themselves-those who march the dusy trails, climb the icy ridges, dig the muddy trenches, carve paths through the jungle, and endure the blinding sandstorms, the treacherous heat and cold, and the constant discomfort of life at the front. They know the face of the enemy and the hellfire of war.
Since photography's birth more than 150 years ago, the camera has become the soldier's historical notebook. As photography improved, the camera got closer and closer to the soldiers' lives, capturing the hard times, the humor, the bravery, the camaraderie, the victories, and, sometimes, the ultimate sacrifice-death. Like the soldiers themselves, war photographers have risked their lives to record moments that change history and forever impact our lives.
I hope these pages will bring the reader closer to an understanding
of the American soldier, so that when they see soldiers, they will see more
than just the uniforms... they
will see these young men and women as the courageous human beings they are.
